Happy Chinese NEW YEAR!!!

Chinese New Year celebrations seem to go on forever! It's now the third day of the new year; and everyone seems to still be doing a friend/family hop about town.
I went for a quick breakfast hunt this morning with the dad and family from out of town. WOW.... Ipoh is PACKED! the hawkers were out full swing; dishing out their famous fare; most of them selling out within a couple of hours. The hungry tourists were spilling out the sides of dim sum joints and lines of tables were spread out along the sidewalks. Undeniably; everyone comes home to Ipoh for the food. We speak about lunch at breakfast; dinner at lunch..and discuss whats for supper at the dinner table! haha It's a funny habit us Ipoh-ians have developed.
Whilst running errands with mom on new years eve; I spotted a quaint little old time confectionery and bakery in the city. It brought back many memories. I couldn't help but to go in and spend a fair bit on sis and I's childhood favourites.I'm sure us kids from the 80's and 90's can relate to these being sold in school and night markets. After having been exposed to world class pastry and understanding ingredients in baked goods from cookies to candies... I have to admit; these seem to have taken a back seat in terms of flavour; though the nostalgic feeling they give me will always remind me to stay true to my roots.

I'm so glad I've gotten my New Year orders and deliveries done early this year. Thanks everyone for being so understanding. It's nice to have a the opportunity to spend my New Year cake/cookie free.Happy CHinese new yEAR MALAYSIA + and the rest of the world :)
Take a moment to celebrate your culture and heritage today. Enjoy the local fare! Take a gaze at favourite corners of your hometown! Devour a piece of homemade family secret filled with love!

Love and well wishes;
Su

A quick switch from Red jumpsuits to Red Lanterns

The reindeer have left and we now see ox's taking main stage!
I can't believe how quickly everything around us has moved from Christmas to Lunar New Year within just days!
Despite having been mobbed with Chinese themed projects and a million new year cookies to decorate; I cant deny how I still see penguins in my dreams! Haha Christmas 2008 haunts me till this day.
The malls in Kuala Lumpur are always first to bring life to each season or celebration. Skyscrapper Christmas trees have been hoisted away post boxing day and replaced with steamers of red and gold; cherry blossoms and many auspicious Chinese symbols, often depicting good health or good fortune. Chinese new year is a fun time; it's about family, a boost of good luck, delicious Chinese delicacies and cultural traditions we seem to neglect at other times of the year! haha, Well it's how i see it at least.
I'm just SO glad its the year of the Ox; it starts me off easy... I'm not looking forward to the year of the dragon or the horse.. or something crazy like the rooster! haha Ox's are fun; they are cute, brown..and delicious. hehe.
Everyone goes home to be with their families this time of year. I had my share of fighting through the war-zone of congested highways as well! The TerroR!
I can't wait to decorate mom's living room and kitchen with red trimmings and fun cookies! It's not generally something I do voluntarily; but this year, after having missed CNY in 2008; I'm really looking forward to being a part of it.
I remember how I made such an effort to get into a New Year mood in Orlando. Haha funny-ness; I miss my dear friends in America; they helped me make it through my 2008.
Can't help but wonder if I'll ever see them again. Hmm..
Anyhow; Chinese new year is 2 days away, and I still do have many loose ends to tie before I can fully enjoy myself. I still have deliveries to complete; accounts to check and designs to quote...ahh. i shan't speak about them. Frustrates me. Can't worry about all that at 2 in the morning.
It's sleep time for Su! YAY!

Life VS Work

Barely half a year into getting down and dirty with my job; I'm already beginning to question if it's taking over my life. I say slowly... but surely.
Neglecting health, loved ones, meals, exercise, fun and social activities is just the beginning of this obsession of mine for work. I'm starting to use those 2 very contrasting words synonymously. It's a scary thought.
As you can imagine; I've been alerted by many caring individuals about how it's beginning to get a little out of hand; but I defend this love of mine... this love for Work.
I convince myself that it is all I want to do in this point in my youth. I make up reasons and excuses in my head to reassure myself that I'm doing the right thing. *tsk tsk*
I finally took a step back and saw for myself today; I am now finally convinced; I want to make this dream happen! but this is not the approach to success.
I'm glad it came to me early. It took many brilliant friends with wise words to shake me off this perception that all I had that was important was work. I had forgotten to spend time with my friends, to show my family I care and to take time to practice my other hobbies.. I hadn't taken a good photograph in AGES! and I haven't written in days.. well; that's never a good thing.
I'm going to spend these last waking moments.... surfing itunes, updating my blog; answering my blogger mails; writing to my boyfriend and organizing my photographs.
I'm even going to make something special for the family to celebrate the New Year with in the morning! That should make mom and dad real happy.
My CNY cookies are finally finished and are all tray-ed. Can't wait to finish handing them out tomorrow evening.
There are more cakes to cover; cupcakes to decorate; articles to write for and designs to quote.. but that can all wait. For once this week, Su is sleeping before 4am. I'm determined to make that happen! *grin*

Not exactly going to leave this post bare, un-delicious or cake-less.
Here's a couple of photos taken at the recent bridal expo at the Midvalley Exhibition center.
Thanks to those who came by to say hi :) Haha It's always funny to be recognized as the 'cookingismypassion' girl!

I had my Delectable cakes on display at Victoria's booth. Heart to Heart always creates such amazingly classy set ups. The perfect backdrop my prettier girly cakes. Hehe. It was so much fun sharing my weekend with Victoria and her funny hubby Melvin. Check out his website; he does awesome wedding photography.
Thanks guys! XX

Breaking my back raking in Prosperity this Chinese New Year!

*grin*
Literally.
I've learnt something new this Lunar new year.
I will never again attempt to make commitments for a gazillion detailed designer cookies by hand....on my own!
I forget sometimes that I'm not part factory machinery. I'm actually just a fleshy little human; young and energetic, but with only slightly stronger than usual stamina and resistance to pain.
Repeating each themed cookie and its many components many many times can really take a toll on my crouched neck and shoulders after about a stiff 15 hours over my work bench a day. I often am greeted with a loud crack as I look up for a stretch. Pretty ouch. No kidding.
I'm sure mom will be able to tell a good story about her 600+ pineapple tarts too! Haha She's a champ.
I suppose it takes falling shoulder blades and bent backbones to convince me that there are things I that I often misjudge when it comes to difficulty and level of detail. When i break it all down; it takes me at least 12-15 minutes to finish each cookie. The many colours; kneading; painting; wording; sculpting... oh.. the JOY! haha I wish it was Christmas again! Compared to these; the penguins were a walk in the park. Ridiculous! ...Cookies are evil. I'm going to remember that next year! haha We live and learn.
Aight! Quit the whining su yin! Get back to work! Those cookies ain't going to decorate themselves...
Ahhh, the sweet sound of self motivation.
I like doing hampers though... those are lots of fun to scout and shop for. It's nice to add modern twists to boring ol baskets of Chinese gifts.
Thanks to the many who placed orders! It's going to be yummy!

A picture blurp of Cute little baby things!

I remember a time where I had more words than I had pictures.
*laughs* the good old days; where I had the luxury of sitting perched solid as I spoke my mind on this journal of mine. It takes me days to complete a single posting since the business has taken off. It's a good thing in some sense; I'm so grateful that things are shaping up to be pretty promising.
The well wishes continue to greet me in my inbox every morning and I am so encouraged to bring what I do to another level. It really means more than the world to me that people believe in what I have to offer. Implementing these hopes of mine just gets a little tough when i'm working on my own.
With Chinese New year just around the corner; it gets even more difficult trying to coordinate myself with juggling and resolving other aspects of my business growth.
Yes I do many cakes a week; I barely have time to photograph or write about each and every one of them anymore. I could never leave this blog of mine. I could never bare to put it to sleep.
It's what brought me here. I owe the spark of my dreams and aspirations to this url I call my Journal. Without it and the people who visit it; right now, I'd probably be working as a 9-5 quantity surveyor. ...*shivers* haha Scary thought.

Precious little trinkets for Precious little Ladies

I've been getting a trend of male clients lately.
It's heart warming to see how much effort and thought they put into showing their loved ones how much they care and appreciate them. Certainly feels like a breath of fresh air after many orders I've received from ladies celebrating their hubby/boyfriends birthdays! Haha.
Men can be so sweet sometimes.. might be the season of 'giving' kicking in from Christmas and New years. *hmm*

Chris had wanted something real special for his beautiful Naomi. He knew what she liked; he knew her style.. he gave me a full write up of what he was looking for. This generous young man was impressively attentive to detail! Haha My favourite bit was the whole cake 'surprise'. It's always nice to have surprises that actually get carried out successfully! The guests were amused and excited; the birthday girl was ecstatic; can't really get a reaction more satisfying than that!

Another shy and thoughtful young man had organized a surprise for his lady love on their anniversary. TOO sweet! I felt butterflies in my tummy as I made her this pair of dainty lace shoes to match a chocolate filled treasure chest. She was an elegant fashion designer.
She's so lucky! it's so meaningful and romantic! *awww...

My Jo isn't doing too bad either. He's been softening this heart of stone with his hopelessly romantic charm. I'm not all for that mushy stuff. Must be the Korean drama's getting to his head.
He took off back down under today. I'm feeling sad. Will just do a brief whine here before I head back to work. Having him help around my cake sanctuary was a little distracting; a little frustrating; a little fun. *sigh* It's not the same staying up till 4am without any company.
Ahh thats reality. I made the choice to love from a million miles away. Can't blame that decision on anyone but our silly selves. *sob*
I'm missing my sunshine!! :(

Su's caught a bug :(

A lazy bug! *giggle*

Having recognized the busiest season of the year for Su; it's hard to believe she's succumbed to temptation of celebrations all around her. AHHH crap; she should be working hard at cakes... but there she was; struggling to say no to family vacations and snuggling in front of the TV with her Jo. "He's visiting all the way from Sydney!" she attempts to reason with herself. *grin* Excuses!I suppose the little breaks in between didn't exactly make too much damage in her tightly packed schedule. Borrowing a couple hours from occasional free moments here and there to create a 3 day weekend was certainly a genius little sneaky way of doing it.
She kept her fingers busy; snapping away at the intriguing sights of Macau and Hong Kong.
Naturally; having delicious food as the point of focus throughout her adventures. She loves sharing snapshots of fun times!

3 hectic days of sight seeing and an overdose of MSG later; she has now returned to her cake filled office and waddled straight into catching up with work. Time waits for no one. Not even for good little Su *pout* :P
Chinese New Year is round the corner...and her inbox has been flooded with Chinese New Year 'Specials' inquiries. Ahhh... patience my friends. She's getting everything organized as prompt as possible. Su's running late... but she's trying not to ruin the surprise. ....
