"Oh my GoD! Is that a face?!"..

...an amused party guest exclaimed.

It's actually a dolls head.
Yes; a head...*laughs* Su made a head out of cake. ;)It was Mayumi's birthday party at Kinselas bar @ Oxford St. last Sunday. Her darling Nesh had requested for me to bake her a special personalized cake but I decided it wouldn't be right to charge him for the cake.I love Mayumi. She's incredibly sweet and absolutely charming. During my trip to Japan; she played 'host' and took us for an full day tour around Tokyo! The travelling experience was made so much more authentic and enjoyable when we had a local to show us around.
Nesh and I worked out a small deal and threw ideas at each other for awhile before I came up with a sketch for the cake.
As it was being drawn; I was extremely excited to see how I'd do with this new challenge. I've never done an enlarged head before...and was quite anxious to know if it'll turn out well.Mayumi has really big eyes. I mean REALLy BIG pretty sharp eyes! *laughs* I really wanted to bring that out in the little Japanese doll I was making resembling her. Nesh also mentioned how much Mayumi loved the Anime Series: Bleach ; and the character ' Kon ' from the show. It was a fierce looking teddy and I thought it'd be cute to incorporate that idea in as well.

The most difficult part to this cake was probably balancing the head and fixing on the gazillion strands of hair into shape. I dressed the doll in a pink Japanese Yukata and painted on a couple of butterfly motifs on the back. Getting the toning and shades of the cloth right took me a fair bit of time but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The Japanese Cherry blossoms along the sides were a couple of strategic cover-ups for some imperfections with my frosting along the bottom *cheeky grin*Everyones eyes lit up as when we showed up with the cake. I'm happy the birthday girl was overjoyed and blown away with how cute and pretty her cake was. I don't think she has let anyone cut it yet! *laughs* I'm not sure if its still good to eat!

Awesome. One of the middle pictures is from that point where you have to carry on, because to go to bed and leave a semi-moulded, eyeless Cake head in the kitchen is a prospect so scary, you absolutely couldn't sleep.

I'm baffled as to how you turn these Wonders out like you do - It's great.

Hey. Whats the difference between royal icing compared to other icings on cupcakes? Can royal icing be edible?
I read up the web on wikipedia- "Although royal icing has traditionally been prepared with fresh egg whites, many people substitute meringue powder, due to the risk of salmonella that using raw egg whites presents."
a little confused though. (:
oh, i love your recipes and all the cakes you made! :D
